Why do people keep calling The Room a comedy?

I was at a bad movie night last Friday with some friends and someone said The Room is hilarious on purpose. It's not, Tommy Wiseau genuinely thought he was making a serious drama. The bad acting and weird plot are real mistakes not jokes. If you go in thinking it's a comedy you miss how truly bizarre the whole thing is. Has anyone else had to explain this to someone who just watched it once?

Wait is that actually true or are you just assuming he didn't know what he was doing? Cause I've heard interviews where Wiseau talks about the tone like it was intentional.

Pretty sure I read an old interview with one of the actors where they said Tommy genuinely thought he was making a serious drama like Tennessee Williams. The tone being intentional feels like his way of saving face after the fact.
