A customer in Boise asked for a 'rustic' wedding cake but got mad about the texture
She specifically said 'rustic' and 'homemade feel' three times, so I did a naked cake with a slightly uneven crumb coat. When she picked it up, she said it looked 'sloppy' and asked if I could smooth it out with more frosting. Has anyone else had a client who didn't understand the style they were asking for?

My buddy had a client ask for a "deconstructed" cake, like they saw on Pinterest. He made this cool tiered cake where the layers were slightly offset on purpose. She called it "broken" and asked for a refund because it looked like it was about to fall over. Some people just don't get the look they're asking for until they see it in real life.

Did your buddy show her a picture of what he was going to make before he actually made it? I feel like with a style that looks "wrong" on purpose, you have to be super clear and get a sign-off on a visual. A quick sketch or even a photo of a similar cake could have saved the whole thing.

My cousin's bakery had a similar mess with a "rustic" pie that a customer called sloppy.
