Burnt the bottom of a triple layer cake, flipped it into a trifle at 11pm
Last Saturday I was baking my mom's birthday cake in my tiny Chicago apartment and the oven runs hot, so the bottom layer came out looking like charcoal while the top two were perfect. I scraped off the burnt bits, cubed up the good parts, and layered it with whipped cream and berries in a glass bowl like I totally meant to do that. Has anyone else saved a ruined cake by turning it into something else, or am I the only one who lies to their family about kitchen accidents?

Trifle is basically the kitchen's version of a reset button, and honestly that's the real lesson here. It's funny how the same move that feels like a cover-up at 11pm turns into "look what I made" by noon the next day. That trick works way beyond baking, it's just about finding a way to make the mess look like a choice.
