Hot take: grandma's 'perfect pie crust' recipe is holding us all back
Last Thanksgiving at my aunt's place in Dayton, my cousin showed up with a store bought crust and everyone gave her grief before she even set it down. Here is the thing though, her pie came out flaky and golden while mine made from grandma's recipe was tough enough to cut with the side of a fork. I spent 4 hours on that crust with the ice water and the cold butter cubes and it still fought me the whole way. I get why we hold onto the old recipes, but a crust you can actually pull off feels better than one you chase for 20 years. Is anyone else's family recipe kind of a dud, or am I about to get banned from Thanksgiving forever?
