Just read that expired baking powder can ruin your whole batch

I was looking up why my biscuits came out flat and dense, and I found out that baking powder actually loses its power after about 6 months from opening. A website called Kitchn had a test showing that expired baking powder just doesn't bubble enough to lift dough. I checked the can in my cupboard and sure enough it was opened over a year ago. When did you guys last replace yours?

Did you test yours in hot water first? I started doing the spoon test after ruining a batch of pancakes last year, just drop a bit in hot water and if it fizzes you're good. Mine was flat so I tossed it and got a new can, been checking the date ever since.

Wait, did you check the expiration date before or after you tested it in the water?

Yeah the hot water test is smart. I started doing the same after a flat batch of biscuits, now I never skip it even with new cans.
