Why do some jokes stick around way longer than they should? People often cling to one mess-up long after it's relevant.

Ugh, been there. I once burned cookies so bad they called them "coal biscuits" for weeks. I just leaned into it and brought actual coal candy next time. Shut them up real quick when I made the joke first. Own the mess up and it stops being fun for them.
