My stand mixer threw a whisk at me during a birthday cake attempt
I was making a double batch of buttercream for my daughter's 16th birthday cake last Saturday. The mixer was on medium speed and suddenly the whisk attachment flew right off and hit the kitchen wall, leaving a big buttercream splatter. Turned out I hadn't pushed it up into the lock properly before starting. Has anyone else had a mixer part go flying like that?

Noticed you said medium speed, what speed setting are you actually using for buttercream?

I run my KitchenAid at speed 4 for buttercream, anything higher whips in too much air lol

I used to run my mixer at speed 6 for buttercream because I thought it needed the extra power. But this discussion made me try speed 4 and now I see why you all recommend it. The texture really is better with less air whipped in.
