The great sourdough starter disaster of 2021

Three years ago, I left my starter on the radiator overnight and it basically turned into a science project. I had to toss the whole jar and start over from scratch with some rye flour. Anyone else ever accidentally cook their starter?

My 2020 starter, lovingly named Dough-B, met its end in a dishwasher. I ran a sanitize cycle and forgot it was on the top rack. Opened it up to find a jar of gray, bubbling cement. I felt like I'd boiled a pet. The worst part was the smell, like hot, sour feet.

My old starter Fred died in a hot car, so @the_joseph is totally right about heat.

Mine got baked inside a turned-off oven someone preheated without looking. The real lesson was labeling the jar with "DO NOT BAKE" in huge letters. Heat finds a way to ruin things.
