Vent: Had to pick between fancy stand mixer and my grandma's old hand mixer for a birthday cake

I spent 20 minutes staring at both last Sunday before finally rolling with the hand mixer because the stand mixer has this weird attachment that never fits right. Ended up with lumps in the batter and the cake came out lopsided, guess nostalgia ain't always the way to go. Anyone else got a family tool they keep using even though it messes things up?

My grandma's old hand mixer got me too many times with lumps before I just bit the bullet and bought a cheap whisk attachment for like 8 bucks at a kitchen supply store. The real trick is that if the attachment is wonky, you can sometimes file down a tiny bit of the plastic or metal edge with a nail file to make it click in right. Sucks about the lopsided cake though, next time try leveling the batter with a spatula before you bake it's a game changer.

totally agree with @stellanelson but honestly the real trick is using a scale instead of measuring cups.

had to pick between fancy stand mixer and my grandma's old hand mixer" - wait wait wait, you had a working stand mixer and chose the hand mixer instead? That's wild to me honestly. The weird attachment thing is so relatable though, my grandma's old potato masher has this bent handle that makes my wrist hurt but I still use it every Thanksgiving because "it was hers." Those lumps in the batter would've been the final straw for me though, I would've been so mad staring at that lopsided cake.
