Warning: my chocolate chip cookies turned into one giant flat sheet

I tried a new recipe from a blog that promised 'the best chewy cookies ever.' I followed it exactly, using the 2 sticks of butter it called for, but I didn't chill the dough at all before baking. I just scooped it right onto the pan. When I checked after 12 minutes, the whole tray had melted into a single, thin, crispy sheet of cookie. It was like a weird, buttery lace doily. I learned that chilling the dough isn't just a suggestion, it's a must for keeping the butter from spreading too fast. Has anyone else had a cookie disaster from skipping the fridge time? What's the shortest chill you can get away with?

Maybe your oven's light is just optimistic, @troysmith, not a liar.

Oh man, this is the rule, not the exception. My car says the gas tank is empty for twenty miles before it actually is. My phone battery dies at 15%. It feels like every piece of tech has a built-in little white lie to make you act the way it wants. The oven just wants you to put the food in so it can really start heating up.
