Wasted $80 on a fancy silicon baking mat that ruined my cookies
Bought one of those high-end silicon baking mats from a kitchen store downtown because everyone online said they're perfect. First batch of chocolate chip cookies spread into flat puddles and stuck to the mat anyway. Has anyone else had bad luck with those things or did I just get a dud?

Are you sure it wasn't the recipe or the oven temperature that caused the flat cookies? I've used a cheap silicone mat for years and my cookies come out just fine, never had them stick either. Maybe you need to let the dough chill before baking, or check if your butter was too soft. Also, some mats are better than others, but that doesn't sound like a mat problem to me.

Yeah but some mats just suck, no offense.

Start with a good quality mat and make sure you're not cranking the heat too high. I've had cheap mats that made cookies spread into weird shapes, but a mid-range one fixed that completely. Also, if your dough is too warm when it hits the mat, that's going to cause problems no matter what you're baking on. Let the dough sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before scooping. That alone solved most of my flat cookie issues.
