Back in 2010, I had to pick between renting a chair in a busy mall shop or opening my own tiny spot on a quiet street.

I went with the quiet street, and after 3 slow months, building a client base from scratch, I wouldn't trade the freedom for anything, even though my buddy in the mall was clearing $800 a week right away.

My cousin's mall kiosk rent back in 2012 was over two grand a month, not counting the cut they took from his sales. He had to be open from 10am to 9pm every single day, no exceptions, even if no one was around. That kind of fixed cost and schedule can break a new business before it even finds its feet. The quiet street spot lets you control your hours and keep costs predictable while you build.

Man, that's a real gut check. My cousin did the mall booth thing for a minute selling phone cases, said the foot traffic was insane but the rent and rules just killed him. He felt like a cog in a machine, you know? There's something about building your own thing slowly that just hits different, even if the start is brutal.

Ugh, @hugo_robinson25, that "cog in a machine" feeling is the WORST.
