Just realized I've been holding my clippers wrong for 8 years, found out when a client in Denver asked for a specific taper.

My buddy Mike was a barber for five years before he learned he was sharpening his straight razor backwards. A regular finally asked why his blade sounded so rough, showed him the proper angle on a whetstone. Mike said his face went red thinking of all the subpar shaves he'd given. He bought that guy free drinks for a month.

Wow @rubyshah, that's the kind of quiet mistake that haunts you for years.

That's a crazy story from @rubyshah. Makes you wonder how many jobs have those hidden, basic skills everyone assumes you know. Did Mike's regulars just quietly suffer through bad shaves for years, or did they maybe think that's just how a shave feels? The embarrassment must have been huge, but at least someone finally spoke up.
