My first fade on a real client went way better than I thought
Honestly I was stuck between doing a simple 1 guard all over or trying my first fade on a paying customer last Thursday. I chickened out on fades for months cause I was scared to mess up. But this guy came in and just said 'do what you think looks good' which kinda forced me to go for it. Started with a 2 on top then dropped to a 1.5 then a 1 and used my Wahl clippers to blend it out. It came out even and he tipped me $10 extra. Has anyone else had a client just let you experiment on them and it worked out?

Oh man that is so Awesome! I love when clients just give you that trust right off the bat. My third week cutting hair this guy came in and said "surprise me" which was TERRIFYING but I ended up doing a skin fade with a little design on the side and he actually loved it. That kind of freedom really helps you figure out what works and what doesn't way faster than sticking to the same safe cuts all the time.

Not gonna lie I see it a little different than most people here including @barbarah19. I get why it feels good when a client trusts you but I actually think "surprise me" or "do what looks good" puts too much pressure on a newer cutter. You need reps on basic stuff first before you start experimenting on real heads. I always tell newbies to start with a simple taper or a 1 guard all over until you can do that in your sleep. That one guy who let you do a skin fade with a design might be the exception not the rule. Plenty of people walk out looking rough because the barber wasn't ready for that kind of freedom yet.
