That seasoned barber swore by cold clipper blades, I ignored him for months

My mentor Jim at the shop on 5th kept saying run your clippers cold, don't let them heat up, and after I kept getting patchy fades on thicker hair I finally listened last week and my blend lines came out way cleaner anyone else fight this habit?

Yeah I fought that habit for way too long too. My old boss at the shop swore by cold blades and I just thought he was being old school. But once I actually tried it the difference was night and day with the blend lines. The heat makes the hair kind of stick and drag instead of cutting clean. Plus now I keep a little cup of ice water next to my station and dip the blades between cuts. It sucks having to stop and cool them down but the results are worth it for sure.

You know, I tried that cold blade thing once and ended up with a drink coaster on my station instead of a cup of ice water... got distracted and drank it halfway through a haircut. Client looked at me funny when I said "sorry, just need to grab more cubes". But honestly the difference is real. I finally switched after ruining a really nice fade on my cousin's kid, the heat just made the hair grabby and uneven. Now I keep a little spray bottle with cold water in the fridge and mist the clippers instead of dipping, less mess on the floor.

Oh man, that ice water trick reminds me of something totally random. My buddy who does woodworking swears by dipping his chisels in ice water between passes on walnut. Says the heat builds up and makes the grain tear instead of slice smooth. I never thought about it for hair but it makes sense - same principle, different craft. Guess some rules just carry over no matter what you're cutting.
