The 70 year old barber who made me rethink my clipper game

Last Tuesday I was cutting at the shop and this older guy, must be pushing 70, comes in for a flat top. He brings his own clippers in a beat up leather case. I figured it was some nostalgic thing. He sets them on my station and theyre Oster 76s, the old metal ones, with a cord like a jump rope. I asked him why he doesnt just let me use my stuff. He said, "Son, I've been cutting with these since 1982. Your fancy cordless stuff is fine, but these cut steel if you ask them to." I powered through the flat top with his clippers and honestly, the cut was smoother than my $400 set. The weight of it, the sound, the way the blade sat. It hit me that I have been chasing all these upgrades and new models for 5 years, and the fundamentals have not changed. The guy knew more about blade tension by feel than I do with my adjustable everything. He paid, said he would be back in two weeks. Has anyone else had a old timer completely humble your setup? What did they swear by?

You ever wonder if the whole cordless trend is just marketing hype for guys who never learned to feel the blade the right way? That old timer probably has more skill in his thumb than most of us will ever get from a digital readout.
