The client who went from a buzz cut to a full Viking braid in six months

This regular guy came in for a simple trim last fall, but after his divorce he grew it out and now wants intricate braids with beads. I spent 45 minutes yesterday just sectioning his hair. How do you even price that kind of time jump from a basic cut?

45 minutes just sectioning" means you charge by the hour now.

But you're not just selling time, you're selling skill. A basic cut uses one set of skills, but this braiding is a whole different craft. It's like comparing a oil change to rebuilding an engine. The price should reflect the work and expertise, not just the clock. A flat rate for the complex style makes sense because you're paying for the result, not the minutes.

Man, I totally disagree with Terry. Charging by the hour for a haircut feels like a car repair shop. This guy is going through a major life change and found something that makes him feel good. You build that loyalty, he tells all his friends. A set price for the style, even a high one, is way clearer and feels more professional. You're an artist, not a mechanic billing in fifteen-minute blocks.
