Had to choose between white noise and rain sounds for sleep, picked wrong

Last night I was lying in bed scrolling through my sleep sounds app and got stuck deciding between this static-y white noise track and a rain on roof recording. I went with the white noise because I figured it would block out the neighbor's dog better. Big mistake. About 20 minutes in, my brain started hearing weird phantom voices in the static, like old radio interference. Had to switch to the rain at 1am and now I'm wondering if anyone else gets creeped out by white noise at night.

Oh man, YES! I had the exact same thing happen. I tried white noise once and within 10 minutes I was convinced I could hear someone whispering my name through the static. It was so freaky I had to turn on every light in my apartment. Rain sounds are way safer, even if your brain starts picturing a storm. Ever catch your own brain making up weird sounds in white noise?

Wait, are you sure the rain sounds don't have their own creepy side effects though, @sarah818? I actually switched TO white noise after months of rain recordings because my brain started hearing phantom thunderclaps and door slams in the downpour, way worse than any static.
