Appreciation post: the old timer who told me to stop torquing stem bolts by feel
Had a guy bring in a bike for a creaky front end and I was about to just crank the stem bolts down like I always do, and he leaned over and said "you're gonna pinch that steerer tube, get the wrench." He was right, I'd been doing it by feel for almost 3 years and never once checked the spec, which on most of these is like 5 Nm and I was probably hitting double that. Now I keep a little 4 Nm preset driver on the bench and the creaks have actually gone down, go figure. Curious how many of you actually torque stem and seatpost bolts every time or just go till it feels snug?
