Had a brand new chain snap on me after 12 miles

I was riding out near the greenway trail last Thursday, just cruising along, and my chain snapped clean in two. I wasn't even mashing hard or anything, just a steady pace on flat ground. Turned out the master link was defective from the factory. I had to walk about 3 miles to the nearest gas station before my buddy could come pick me up. Total waste of a nice afternoon and I had to borrow a friend's truck to go back for my bike. Anyone else ever get a brand new component that failed right out of the box like that?

Oh man, that's rough. Reminds me of the time I bought a brand new tire pump from the shop and the hose burst on the second use. I was so mad I nearly threw it in the creek. You think you're getting quality stuff and then it just lets you down. Did the chain manufacturer at least own up to it or give you a replacement?

Take it with a grain of salt, but no they didn't own up to it. Sent me a generic sorry and said it was user error. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I see their brand now.

Yeah but here's something nobody's talking about - when a company blames "user error" for something that's clearly a design or manufacturing flaw, it says way more about them than it does about you. That response tells you they're more interested in protecting their bottom line than actually standing behind what they sell. And honestly, it makes me wonder how many other people had the same issue and just got brushed off with the same copy-paste excuse. It's not just about one bad experience anymore, it's about realizing their whole customer service philosophy is built on avoiding responsibility. That trust you gave them? They pretty much proved it was misplaced, and that's the kind of thing that sticks with you. You end up looking at every product they make differently, right?
