Hot take: Not every worn chain needs replacing right away
Most bike shops push for a new chain as soon as there's any stretch. I disagree with that blanket rule. Last month, a student brought in her bike with a slightly worn chain. She couldn't afford the fix. I took the time to clean it thoroughly and measure the wear. It was at the edge but still okay for short rides. I told her to save up and come back in a few weeks. Some might call this bad practice, but I believe in being flexible. If the bike is safe and the customer is informed, it's an ethical choice. Strict policies can hurt people who just need their bike to get by.

Shops would replace a chain for staring at it wrong.

Heard a shop replaced a bike chain just for pointing at it.

What kind of shop has that little faith in their own work. Are they worried a dirty look will wear out the metal? Sounds like they're hunting for any reason to sell you something new.
