Just blew $75 on a 'universal' bottom bracket tool that stripped the splines on a client's bike

The cheap alloy casting gave out halfway through the install, and now I'm eating the cost of a new BB and the labor to extract the old one... has anyone found a truly solid brand for these, or is it just a 'buy the specific tool' situation?

My universal tool from the parts store lasted exactly three uses before it turned into a fancy paperweight. It sounds like you got the same batch of soft metal cheese they sold me. I guess the only thing universal about them is the ability to fail on any bike. Now I just borrow the specific tool from the shop down the street and buy the guy a coffee.

Oh man, that's rough... but honestly, I've had the opposite luck. My cheap universal tool from the parts store has held up for years now. I just make sure to really crank it in by hand first so it's seated perfectly before I put a wrench on it. Maybe it's just a luck of the draw thing with those castings... I'd be scared to spend big money on a specific tool for every single bike that comes in.

Which parts store brand did you get, @wendyg43?
