Pro tip: That guy at the co-op told me to stop using spray lube on my chains

Met Dave down at the Bike Kitchen in Portland and he swore spray lube was just attracting grit. I ignored him for 6 months until my chain started grinding on a 50 mile ride. Finally switched to a drip wax lube and my drivetrain actually stays clean now. Anyone else get bad advice from a well meaning shop guy?

Switched to a wax dip myself after trashing two chains in one season. The stuff from Molten Speed Wax is pricey but my drivetrain actually looks clean after a century ride now. Lesson learned the hard way that sticky lube just turns into grinding paste.

Yeah, have you ever pulled apart a waxed chain after a muddy ride? It's like it never even happened. The crud just flakes right off instead of turning into that nasty black sludge that eats your cassette.

Oh man, the grinding paste thing is so real. I did the exact same thing - kept using that sticky wet lube because it was cheap and easy, then wondered why my chain sounded like a coffee grinder after a few hundred miles. Switched to a simple drip wax last spring and it's night and day, my cassette actually shines now instead of looking like it came out of an oil spill.
