Rant: a guy at the Indy bike swap told me to torque stems by feel, and I'm still not over it
Was at the swap meet in Indianapolis last month digging through a bin of quill stems when this older mechanic next to me says torque wrenches are for people who don't trust their hands. He'd been wrenching since the 70s, I'll give him that. But I watched him snug a 4 bolt faceplate down on an aluminum steerer with a 5mm and a grunt, and I just kept thinking about the carbon steerer a customer brought in last spring with a crushed spot right under the clamp. So now I check torque on every cockpit I touch, even the cheap stuff, and it costs me maybe two minutes a bike. He called it new school nonsense. Am I crazy for thinking feel is how you crack a steerer, or do some of you still go by hand on the old steel bikes?
