The time I watched a guy torque his seatpost with a pipe wrench

Was hanging around the co-op downtown last month... this guy rolls in with a creaky saddle. He pulls out a 12-inch pipe wrench and starts cranking on his seatpost clamp like he's tightening a gas line. I had to step in before he ovalized the whole tube. Why do folks grab the biggest tool they see instead of like... a 4mm hex key? Has anyone else had to rescue a customer from their own hardware store habits?

Twelve-inch pipe wrench on a seatpost clamp" is wild. Did he look offended when you stepped in or did he realize he was in over his head?

Right? That's exactly what I was thinking when I read it... some folks just grab the closest tool and hope for the best. Had a guy try to hammer a seatpost into a frame with a rubber mallet once, made a real mess of the whole thing before I stepped in and showed him how to do it right.

Oh man, a rubber mallet on a seatpost? I bet that sounded as bad as it looked. You almost have to respect the sheer confidence of someone who looks at a delicate bike part and says "time to get medieval on this thing." I half expected him to grab a chainsaw next for the chain. Did he at least have safety glasses on, or was he going full send with zero protection?
