TIL my shop's truing stand got bent when a customer leaned on it, and I didn't notice for 2 weeks
A guy in the shop last Tuesday put his whole body weight on the truing stand arm while I was grabbing spokes, and it tweaked the upright just enough to throw my readings off. I spent 2 weeks chasing a phantom wobble on 4 different wheels before I finally laid a straight edge on the stand and saw it was out by about 3mm at the top. Anyone else got a trick for checking a truing stand's alignment without pulling the whole thing apart?
The same thing happened to me last year and now I check mine every Monday before I touch a wheel. The fast way is to pull the axle out and put a known straight wheel in there, then spin it and watch the gap at the rim on both sides. If the gap changes as it goes around, either the wheel is off or the stand is, so try a second wheel you trust to rule one out. You can also flip the wheel 180 degrees in the stand, and if the wobble moves to the other side, it was the wheel all along, not the stand. My upright was out about 2mm at the top and it was way easier to spot that way than messing with a straight edge. Took me ten minutes to reset it and I never had a ghost wobble again.
