Vent: Stop calling every chain the same length just because you counted the links

I was helping a guy at the shop last Tuesday and he swore his chain was the right length 'cause he counted 116 links like his buddy's bike. Turns out he had a 42t cassette and a long cage derailleur, his buddy had a 36t. The chain was SO tight the derailleur was almost straight. Hard to believe but I see this mistake at least once a week. How do you guys explain chain length to beginners without them just counting random links?

Gotta disagree with you @tara793, measuring wrong just costs more later lol.

Last Tuesday I watched a guy snap his derailleur hanger doing exactly what you said, and honestly maybe that's the real lesson. Counting links gets you close enough most of the time, and the bike shop makes money off the fix.
