Can we really trust a random Redditor's take on a show?
I was scrolling through a thread about best crime dramas and someone named u/darknightfanatic kept saying The Wire is overrated and the first season is a slog. I almost skipped it because of that advice, but then my buddy loaned me his DVD set and told me to give it until episode 4. That guy was totally wrong. Season 1 of The Wire is incredible from the minute McNulty starts talking about the docks. Hooked me immediately and I binged all 5 seasons in 2 weeks. But I also got burned on another show recommendation from a different thread where someone hyped up Ozark as the next Breaking Bad. I watched 3 episodes and it was just boring family drama with no payoff. So who do you actually trust for show recs? Has anyone else found Reddit advice to be hit or miss?

Yeah, hit up a friend who's got similar taste to yours, not some random. My buddy and I have the same kind of patience for slow burn shows, so I trust him way more than a thread full of strangers. But here's the thing - when that random Redditor said The Wire was a slog, did they actually explain why, or just say it sucked? That's what I always want to know. Like, were they bored by the pacing or did they just not get how the show builds its world, you know?

You know what, same thing happened to me with Breaking Bad actually. I kept seeing people on Reddit say the first two seasons are super slow and almost skipped the whole show because of it. Then my cousin just put the pilot on while we were hanging out and I was hooked by the time the RV scene happened. I mean, it's wild how one person's slog is another person's world building. I guess it really comes down to what you look for in a show, you know? Some people want instant payoff and others like the slow burn.
