I called a 12 episode anime filler trash, now I'm 40 episodes deep and hooked

A buddy in my Discord group kept pushing this show for weeks, and I finally caved last Thursday out of pure boredom. The first two episodes were slow, lots of talking heads and world building, honestly I almost quit. But around episode 5, this side character got a backstory that wrecked me, and now I'm watching two episodes a night at 1am. Has anyone else had a show flip you around that hard after you publicly roasted it? What episode was the turning point for you?
