I finally gave 'The Wire' a real shot after putting it off for years, and it took me three tries to get past the first few episodes.

That's a great point about the subtitles. It's not just the slang either, the show throws you right into the middle of complex systems. You're hearing police jargon about wiretaps and warrants, then you cut to the docks with union rules and shipping codes. The first time, I had no idea what a "detail" was or why it mattered. Reading along forces you to slow down and actually process all that dense information they're giving you right from the start.

Oh man, I had to do the same thing! Watching with subtitles really helped me follow all the street slang and police talk.
