Just realized I spent 4 months trying to get through The Wire the first time

Every episode felt like homework because I kept stopping to look up who that guy was, and by the time I got to season 4 I was fine just letting it wash over me without knowing every name... has anyone else had to restart a show because they were overthinking it?

The Wire is a different show if you don't keep track" - maybe that's true, but it's still a good show if you don't. I watched it once without taking notes and enjoyed it plenty. Not every show has to be studied like a textbook to be worth watching.

Did you ever find yourself googling "is that the same guy from season 1" and then realizing you've already forgotten the entire plot? I did that with The Sopranos and ended up treating it like a podcast for a whole season before I gave up and started over. My brain just refuses to keep track of more than three characters at a time.

Honestly I gotta disagree with treating a show like homework being a bad thing. I mean you said "is that the same guy from season 1" - that's literally the point of a dense serialized drama. The Wire rewards that kind of attention. I rewatched season 1 three times before moving on and I caught new connections each time. If you're not keeping track of who's who, you're basically watching a different show than the one the writers made.
