Your buddy gave you the single worst piece of TV advice in history. The whole first season sets up the rules of the game and makes you care about those characters. Skipping it is like starting a book on chapter ten and wondering who everyone is. You need to go back and watch it right now.

McNulty's whole arc in season one is basically a long, slow burnout (which gets old fast). You can pick up the rules just fine from season two's docks.
