Talking to my buddy about The Expanse changed how I watch sci-fi now

He said it's actually a political drama in space, not a sci-fi action show like I thought. I rewatched season 1 with that in mind and it hit way different. Anybody else have a show flip meaning after someone explained it differently?

My buddy did the same thing with Battlestar Galactica. He just said "its about 9/11 and the war on terror" and I sat there for a minute. Then I rewatched the first episode and saw the suicide bombers and the military occupation stuff and it clicked hard. It never felt the same after that. Sometimes one little comment can just break open a whole show for you. It makes you feel kinda dumb for not seeing it yourself honestly.

Honestly, have you ever thought about how the Cylons represent not just terrorism but also the American military-industrial complex itself? The whole idea of them being "created by man" and then turning on their makers mirrors how our own technology and surveillance systems can end up controlling us. It adds this whole layer about the dangers of relying on your own creations for security, not just fighting an outside enemy.

Start with what @ellis.susan said about Cylons and the military-industrial complex. That is a good point I never caught either. The Expanse thing reminds me of how I watched Battlestar Galactica for years as just a cool space show with robots. Then someone pointed out the whole suicide bomber thing in the miniseries and it hit me like a truck. Never saw the occupation of New Caprica the same way after that. Sometimes you just need someone to point out the obvious.
