Did your friend do the same thing? My buddy Pete bailed on The Bear after like 15 minutes because the yelling stressed him out, and he put on Slow Horses instead. He texted me at 11pm like "why did nobody tell me Gary Oldman was in this." Now he watches two episodes a night and keeps calling me to talk about Lamb's gross office. Some shows just hit different when you aren't forcing yourself to sit through them.
