Why does every show with a big mystery cliffhanger get canceled after one season?

I started a show called The Peripheral last Tuesday on Prime, it ends on a massive plot twist, and then I find out it got axed after 8 episodes. It feels like streaming services just greenlight these sprawling story arcs without any plan to finish them, and I'm tired of investing hours into something that'll never pay off. Am I crazy for checking if a show has a confirmed second season before I even press play on episode one, or is that just standard practice now?

Whoa wait, The Peripheral got canceled?? That ending was such a cliffhanger, I was literally waiting for season two news like yesterday. That's brutal, and now I'm side-eyeing every streaming show that doesn't have a renewal locked in before I hit play too.
