Appreciation post: I switched from a standard firebrick forge lining to a castable refractory mix after a crack ruined a Damascus billet.
That was in May, and now my heat is way more even, saving me about 15 minutes on heat cycles. Anyone else made a forge upgrade that paid off faster than expected?

Wondering if a better seal from the castable mix also cuts down on heat loss over time, which would add years to the shell.

Seal helps, but heat loss is more about insulation.

Ever think about how the lining change might affect the forge's overall lifespan, not just the heating time?
