Bought a 'high carbon' anvil off a guy in Spokane for $450, turned out to be cast iron

It was a 150lb anvil and the face dented like clay on the third hammer strike. Had to scrap it and lost the full amount. What's the best way to test an anvil before you buy one, especially from a private seller?

Oof, that's a brutal way to lose four hundred bucks.

Yeah, "brutal" is right, nancy817. Been there with a fake ticket site once. My rule now is to only use payment methods with buyer protection, like a credit card or PayPal Goods and Services. If a deal looks too good, it probably is. I check the site URL for weird spellings and look for a real customer service phone number, not just an email form. Saved me a couple times since.
