Coal forge beat my gasser on the small scrollwork every time

I ran the same 3/4 inch S scroll in both my coal forge and the two burner gas rig last month in the shop, and the coal one gave me clean forge welds with way less scale. The gas forge ran hotter but oxidized the surface so fast I had to wire brush between every heat. Anybody else keep the coal lit just for the small welds?
