Coal vs propane for a weekend forge, here is what I picked

I had to choose between a coal forge and a propane one for my tiny shop in Toledo. I went with coal because a buddy gave me a beat-up rivet forge for free, but I forgot how much TIME coal takes to get going. After three Saturday mornings of smoke and fiddling with the blower, I finally got a good fire, but my first knife came out with a nasty soft spot. Has anyone else struggled with coal heat control and gone back to a gas burner just for consistency?
