I thought that $8 harbor freight wire brush was junk, but my welds finally stopped popping
I was cleaning scale with a worn-out hand brush for weeks and getting porosity every time, then tried the cheap knotted cup brush on my angle grinder and the difference was night and day. Has anyone else had a tool they dismissed for years actually fix a problem?
Tbh the brush didn't fix your porosity, it just cleaned the metal better so you stopped dragging junk into the puddle. Popping and porosity almost always come from crap on the surface, mill scale, oil, rust, whatever, and a worn hand brush just smears it around instead of taking it off. A knotted cup brush on a grinder spins fast enough to actually bite into the scale and get down to clean steel, which is the whole game. The $8 part is kinda beside the point, a decent brush on a grinder beats a great brush in your hand every time. So the tool didn't fix it, the prep did, the brush just finally let you do the prep right.
