Pro tip: My hammer control got way better after I changed one thing about my anvil stand

For years my anvil just sat on a big block of wood, and my hammer blows felt kind of dead and bouncy. Last month I built a new stand out of 4x4s filled with sand, bolting the anvil down tight. The difference after just a week of forging is huge, my strikes feel solid and I'm not fighting the bounce anymore. It's like the anvil just eats the energy now. Has anyone else tried a sand filled stand and noticed a big change in their work?

Sand in the legs made a huge difference for me too.

My old setup was a railroad tie on cinder blocks, and I wasted so much energy just fighting the ring and bounce. After seeing Susan_Wright34's comment, I finally tried the sand-filled 4x4 method last fall. The first time I struck a hot piece on the new stand, the quiet thud was shocking. It feels like the force goes straight into the metal now, not into shaking my whole garage. I can actually feel the difference in my elbow at the end of a long day.

Can you feel the difference in your shoulder too?
