Pro tip: that old guy at the Kent swap meet caught me about to quench in the wrong oil
I was set up at the Kent swap meet outside Seattle last Saturday, showing a guy my 1084 hunter blade, and this old timer leaned over the table and said, "You planning to quench that in canola?" I said yeah, it's cheap and it works. Then he said, "Faster steels off a magnet need faster oil or you'll grow pearlite instead of martensite." I brushed it off til I got home and pulled up a chart. He was right. I'd been quenching 1095 and W2 in canola for about 8 months and wondering why my edges chipped and my HRC numbers read 55 instead of 62. Switched to Parks 50, and the very first blade jumped 8 points on my hardness tester. So before you buy that canola at Costco for your 1095, do yourself a favor and match the oil to the steel. What are you all using for fast quench steels?
