Rookie mistake with my forge fire, the fix was so simple

I kept fighting with my forge not getting hot enough to weld. I tried adjusting the airflow, swapping fuel, even rebuilt the burner once. Then a guy at the local shop in Cheyenne watched me light it and pointed out my firepot was packed with ash and scale from three months of work. I never cleaned it out because it looked fine from the top. After I scooped it all out and started fresh, the heat difference was night and day. Welding temps came up in about five minutes instead of twenty. Has anyone else had a dirty firepot sneak up on them like that, or do you all clean it out on a set schedule?

Cleaning it out is part of the job, not a surprise. If you can't see the bottom of your firepot, that's on you, not the forge.
