Saw a guy at the Tacoma forge meet using a 3-pound cross peen for everything, even scrollwork.

It got me wondering if sticking with one hammer for too long actually limits your technique, or if it's just about getting really good with your favorite tool.

A three pound cross peen for scrollwork is a wild choice. That's like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Maybe he's just built different, but my arm hurts thinking about it. Getting good with one tool is fine, but that seems like making the job way harder on purpose. You gotta match the tool to the task sometimes.

It reminds me of people who insist on using a chef's knife for every kitchen task, even peeling an apple. There's a weird pride in using one tool for everything, even when it makes the work slower and messier. It's like they value the struggle more than the result.

My buddy Dave tried to build a whole deck last summer using only a small hand saw. He said he wanted to master it. It took him three weekends and he was so sore he could barely move. The cuts were all wobbly too. He finally borrowed my circular saw and finished in an afternoon. Sometimes the right tool just saves you from your own stubborn ideas, you know?
