Tbh, my buddy argued that a $200 propane forge is just as good for a beginner as building a coal one. It got me thinking.

Way cleaner" is a bit much. It's a forge, not a hospital. A little soot on the garage floor wipes up. The real issue is if the coal smoke is getting in your house, which it shouldn't if you're set up right outside. People forged with coal for centuries without needing a hazmat suit.
