Tried a coal forge for the first time after years on gas - what a mess

I've been running a gas forge out of my garage in Phoenix for about 4 years now. Last weekend a buddy let me try his coal setup and my first three blades came out with this weird scaling pattern I've never seen before. Took me two hours to figure out I was pulling the steel out too fast before the coke bed was fully burning. Now I'm wondering if all that time on gas made me lazy about reading the fire. Anyone else switch between the two and find one way harder than expected?

@the_christopher might be overthinking it though. Gas forges let you focus on the steel and control way more than coal ever could.

@the_christopher nailed it, but nobody's talking about how Phoenix humidity messes with coal fires.

Coal teaches you to feel the heat, gas just hands it to you.
