Finally got my group to actually read the rules by using a 5 minute timer trick

My usual group takes forever to set up games. Last month I pulled out Scythe and before anyone could zone out I set a stopwatch for 5 minutes and said whoever reads the most key rules first gets to pick the next game. Worked way better than I expected. Everyone actually focused and we got through setup in like 20 minutes instead of an hour. Has anyone else found a weird trick that gets people to pay attention to rulebooks?

Saw someone online say they hide a few snacks in the rulebook pages so players have to flip through to find them. Sounds messy but probably works.

Found a half-eaten granola bar in my Pandemic rulebook once, still have no idea how it got there.

Ask @hart.sage if they've actually seen someone do this at a real game night. Sounds like a good way to end up with crumbs crushed into every rulebook page. Would the wrappers get greasy fingerprints all over the player boards too?
