Just realized I was teaching Catan wrong for 2 years

So I've been playing Settlers of Catan with my group at the local shop since 2022, and I always thought you could only build one road per turn, no exceptions. Then last week this guy named Jake from the Tuesday night group watched me play and said 'Hey, you know you can build multiple roads if you have the resources, right?' I looked it up in the rulebook and he was totally right. All those games where I hoarded brick and lumber for nothing, man. Has anyone else had a moment where a basic rule just clicked later than it should have?

Sat here nodding along like I've never read a rulebook in my life, @taylorellis.

The part where Mark "stared at the rulebook for five minutes looking SO defeated" is the REALEST thing I've ever read. I bet half those revised "house rules" people swear by started the exact same way.

My buddy Mark actually had this EXACT thing happen with him and Ticket to Ride. For like a whole year he thought you could only claim one route per turn even if you had the cards. We played so many games where he'd sit there with like 8 blue cards and just pass his turn because he thought he was saving them for later. Finally my girlfriend watched him play one time and was like "dude you can legit claim multiple routes if you want" and he just stared at the rulebook for five minutes looking SO defeated. Now every time we teach new people we make sure to mention it like five times so nobody else misses it haha.
