Just realized I've been playing Catan wrong for about 7 years
My friend's kid in Portland was setting up the board and asked why I put the number tokens on the hexes before placing the settlements. I always thought you placed the settlements after the numbers, not the other way around. It explains why my starting spots were always so bad. Has anyone else had a core rule just click way too late?

Wait, you still put the numbers down first? The official rules say you place all the settlements and roads before you flip the number tokens over. That randomizes the board after people pick their spots, so nobody can game the system. It's a pretty big deal for balance.

Honestly that's a brutal way to find out. Tbh the setup order changes everything, it's the whole point of a balanced start. Ngl I'd be so mad at myself for seven years of bad games. Makes you wonder what other rules we've all been quietly getting wrong.

So @the_max is right about the official order, but does that mean we should shuffle ports too? That feels like it would just add more setup time for no real gain.
