My buddy in Phoenix swore by a 'no mercy' rule for new players in 'Gloomhaven' and it nearly killed our campaign.
He insisted on playing every scenario at maximum difficulty from the start, which led to three consecutive party wipes and almost made two people quit before we finally ignored his advice and dropped the level.

Honestly, isn't the point to have fun and learn the game? Getting wiped over and over just kills the mood for everyone. Tbh, a tough but fair challenge is way better than just pure punishment.

My kid's piano teacher calls it the "zone of challenge." If a piece is too easy, he gets bored. Too hard, he quits. That sweet spot in the middle is where real learning happens. It feels like game designers forget that sometimes.
